What drives the number
Three things move a retaining wall estimate.
01
Length and height
Square footage drives the base price. Walls over 4 ft also need geogrid reinforcement, which the calculator adds automatically.
02
Material
Versa-Lok, Techo-Bloc, Unilock, and natural stone veneer all price differently per square foot. Pick the one you're picturing.
03
Access and extras
A backyard a truck can't reach costs more to build. Drainage, demolition of an old wall, permits, and lighting each add a line item.
Questions people actually ask
Retaining wall FAQ
How accurate is a retaining wall cost calculator?
Close enough to plan around, not close enough to sign a contract on. This tool runs the same per-square-foot material rates and access multipliers we build real quotes from, so the range is real math, not a marketing number. It can't see your soil, your slope, or what's buried in your yard, and that's exactly what a site visit is for.
How much does a Versa-Lok wall cost per square foot?
Versa-Lok starts at $45 per square foot in the calculator above, covering block and standard installation. Techo-Bloc runs $55, Unilock $65, and natural stone veneer $80 per square foot for the same wall. Access, drainage, permits, and pillars move the number from there.
When does a wall need geogrid?
Once a wall passes 4 feet, the soil behind it pushes harder than gravity and block weight alone can hold. Geogrid is a fabric mesh laid into the backfill that ties the wall into the hillside behind it. The calculator adds it automatically the moment you slide height past 4 ft.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Pennsylvania?
Depends on your township and how tall the wall is. Many Western PA townships require a permit and a stamped engineering drawing on walls over 4 feet, and some set the line lower. Check with your township before you dig. If yours requires it, we loop the engineer into the quote.
Why do wall quotes vary so much?
Two contractors can look at the same wall and land in very different places, and both be telling the truth. Most of the gap comes down to access, what's actually under the grass, and whether drainage and geogrid are already priced in instead of showing up later as a change order. Ask what's included before you compare quotes.
What's the difference between Versa-Lok, Techo-Bloc, Unilock, and stone veneer?
Versa-Lok and Techo-Bloc are both modular concrete block systems, priced close together, and both hold up well on a straight residential wall. Unilock steps up in finish options. Stone veneer is real stone face over a structural block core, it costs the most per square foot and looks the part.
How we price walls
Our own crew builds the wall start to finish, no subs. We haul our own base stone, so drainage rock shows up on the truck already priced into the job instead of billed as an extra later. We're certified through the Samson School for Advanced Segmental Paving. Every wall gets drainage first: pipe and stone go in before a single block goes up, because a wall that traps water behind it is a wall you'll be rebuilding.

A wall is a drainage system with a face on it.
